Gustave Herter was born in Germany and came to America about 1848. This table can be identified as his work because of its close resemblance to a table supplied by Herter about 1860 to the Victoria Mansion in Portland, Maine. The pictorial marquetry of the top may have been imported from France and incorporated into this table, probably made in New York.
