Late Baroque or Georgian-style chairs usually featured cabriole legs, balloon-shaped seats, and curving splats and stiles—all variations of the serpentine curve, or what English artist William Hogarth dubbed the "Line of Beauty." This chair was made for Reverend Edward Holyoke, president of Harvard College from 1737 to 1768. Like most New England chairs of this time period, its base is strengthened by stretchers and its legs end in pad feet.
