Slat-back chairs were made over a long period of time and were a common form of seating, produced by chairmakers in every city and hamlet in America. Surviving examples can be hard to identify as distinct regional types. This example, with its vigorous outlines, exaggerated bowed-out slats, and unusually complex finials, belongs to a group that originates on the South Shore or Cape Cod area of Massachusetts.
