Slat-back chairs have been made in America from the middle of the seventeenth century to the present. Early examples typically have large ball-and-reel finials, like those on this chair. This chair was made by a turner, who fabricated most of the parts on a lathe. The slightly curved horizontal slats provide a comfortable contour for the sitter's back.
