The well-balanced composition of this chair, related to plate 36, number 1, of Thomas Sheraton's Drawing Book (1791), is composed of a pierced urn back draped with a swag and crowned with plumed feathers. Square-back chairs were common throughout the United States during this period; this is a fine example of the style, with superior carving.
