Nineteenth-century craftsmen often applied eclectic historical details to fashionable furniture forms, like this side chair that may have been used in a front hall or parlor. The spool-turned elements are reminiscent of Jacobean furniture, while the lancets, ogee arches, and quatrefoils on the back emulate the tracery of a Gothic stained-glass window.
