Of the four styles of furniture discussed by J. C. Loudon in his Encyclopedia of Cottage, Farm, and Villa Architecture (1833), "the Grecian or modern style" was given the most importance. Chairs such as this example continued the "antique" influence established earlier in the century. This example does so with its saber-shaped front legs, classical urn-shaped splat, and sweeping line from crest to seat.
