In addition to special commissions, the Herter Brothers provided cosmopolitan, ready-made furniture for the wealthy throughout much of the United States. This chair is an example of one of the ready-made designs the firm produced. Its coloration and rectilinear lattice work are derived from the designs of English furniture makers, such as E. W. Godwin, who looked for inspiration in Chinese furniture as well as a broad range of Asian, particularly Japanese, art.
