The series of chairs that the husband-and-wife architect team Denise Scott Brown and Robert Venturi developed for Knoll International mixes metaphors in order to offer irony and delight. The form of this chair echoes the eighteenth-century designs of the London cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale, while the bird's-eye maple veneer evokes early American furniture.
