The ideal parlor in the mid-nineteenth century required a seven-piece seating furniture set consisting of an armchair, a lady's chair, a sofa, and four parlor chairs. Typically, chairs had short cabriole legs and balloon-shaped backs with pinched waists. The thronelike armchair, such as this one, was made for the man of the house. The laminated wood back allows for intricate piercing and carving.
