This chair was named the 40/4 because forty chairs could be compactly stacked within four feet. One of the great twentieth-century chair designs, it won the highest design award at the Trienalle Di Milano in 1964 and the AID International Design Award in 1965. In 1988 industrial design historian A. J. Pulos wrote, "The design has yet to be surpassed for economy of manufacture and seating, storing, and ranging effectiveness."
