The French settled the lower Mississippi Valley in the early eighteenth century and remained the dominant ethnic culture there into the early nineteenth century. Slat-back chairs found in Louisiana relate to French examples in a number of ways, namely in the shaped outlines of the slats, the outward bow of the seat lists, the lowness of the seats to the ground, and the turned or tapered feet.
